Blizzards occur all over the world, even in tropic areas; However, they are most common on mountain tops and extremely cold places like Alaska. In America, blizzards are common in the Upper Midwest and the Great Plains area, but can occur almost everywhere. The exceptions are the Gulf and California coast. The blizzards that do spawn commonly move westward and then turn north, or they go east to dissipate at either the Gulf coast or the southern Atlantic Coast. Blizzards can also be created in Canada.
how often do blizzards form?
About 10 blizzards occur yearly in the United States. Of these blizzards, very few result in injury or casualties among the affected population. In the years 1949-2000, 438 blizzards occurred in the US alone. This is a fairly common event, so everyone should be prepared for an event like a blizzard, even if you don't think a blizzard will occur in your area.
